If left untreated, high blood pressure can lead to serious health problems, increasing the risk of heart attack, stroke, and heart failure, according to the American Heart Association. In addition to medication, lifestyle changes also play a crucial role in its management. A recent study suggests that consuming beetroot juice may help lower blood pressure, especially in older adults.
The study, published in Free Radical Biology and Medicine, involved 78 participants divided into two groups: young (18โ30 years old) and elderly (67โ79 years old). Participants consumed nitrate-rich beetroot juice or a placebo drink twice daily for two-week periods. The aim was to analyze the impact of oral bacteria on blood pressure levels. Results showed that only the elderly group experienced a slight reduction in blood pressure.
According to cardiologist Padma Shenoy, the effect is linked to changes in oral bacteria. Dietitian Elizabeth Adrian explains that these bacteria help convert nitrates into nitric oxide, a substance that relaxes blood vessels and improves circulation. Nitrates are naturally found in vegetables such as beetroot, spinach, and arugula, and are often associated with better heart health. Experts emphasize that while the results are promising, more studies are needed to provide strong recommendations. Beetroot juice may be an additional aid, but it does not replace a healthy lifestyle. A balanced diet, limiting salt intake, and regular physical activity remain the key factors for keeping blood pressure under control.
