A female doctor has been permanently dismissed from her job after being found guilty of engaging in a secret sexual relationship with a patient who had mental health issues. General practitioner Maria Bastas had sexual relations with the man in her car and at her workplace, a disciplinary hearing was told. In an Australian court, Bastas was accused of an "inappropriate, long-term, personal, and sexual relationship" with the man between 2015 and 2022. The "Daily Star" reports that the relationship began after they exchanged phone numbers during a consultation, before quickly escalating into private meetings outside the clinic. According to the patient, they had sex in the doctor's car about 2-3 times a week or in the bed of her consultation room. But that's not all, as the court was informed that Bastas allegedly invited the patient to her "large house" with a "gym, a large billiard table, a bar, and fountains." The patient also claimed that they got drunk on red wine one day and added that the doctor had shown him "her garage full of shoes, about 300 pairs." The man further stated that Bastas told him they needed to be careful because her ex-husband's house was nearby. However, the patient added that in early 2018, the doctor "began to distance herself." This caused him to fall into depression and start smoking and drinking. He later filed a complaint with the Health Care Complaints Commission regarding the inappropriate relationship, which led to the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal. Dr. Bastas denied that the relationship was sexual but admitted it became "inappropriately close." Nevertheless, the tribunal believed the patient's account, citing phone records, witness evidence, and the pattern of contact over several years.
