One day after being discharged from Trauma Hospital following the unrest at the opposition protest, activist Aulon Kalaja told Top Channel that he was assaulted by four officers. In an interview with journalist Dorjana Bezat, Kalaja stated that he was struck on the back of the neck and that several sprays were thrown at him. Kalaja said he will file two reports with the Prosecutor's Office: one for the false report made against him and another for what he calls torture during the protest. - Mr. Kalaja, the Tirana Police have charged you with assault in the line of duty, while you suffered injuries during this protest and ended up in the hospital. How do you view this entire situation? Kalaja: I come from activism and have participated in many protests, but this is the first time in my life that I have been assaulted. It seemed very strange to me, unprofessional. I lost consciousness when I tried to pull a protester from the police lines. At that moment, I was kicked twice by two different police officers. I tried to hold on, I grabbed an officer's vest, and then I was struck by two other officers with vests on the neck. Later, sprays and pepper were thrown at me from three directions; I don't know what substances they wereโ€”I have requested toxicological analysis. Later, I lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital. They told me I had blows to the head and neck and gave me a neck brace to wear for three weeks. Last night, I couldn't sleep at all due to the burning sensation in my head and eyes, but I have more problems with my neck. They beat you and don't even let you cry. If they think I assaulted the police, it's not in my nature; I have absolutely never had issues with law enforcement. I will go immediately to the police and the prosecutor to report the person who filed a false report against me, as well as the entire unconstitutional procedure and my right as a normal protester. If they think they will stop me, I tell you: the protest is on, here I am. These are fascist methods. I will be in the square against all injustices that I consider as such. - For you, was the police response disproportionate the day before? Kalaja: It was unprofessional, disproportionate; it was police organization I had never seen before. The goal yesterday was to disperse the protest. I was with Luรงiano Boรงi and Klevis Balliu, we were with journalists, and that's where we were attacked. The violence was unnecessary; I don't know what the police's justification will be. Something else also struck me when I regained consciousness. I saw the Interior Minister visiting some police officers who came laughing to the hospital, and the Interior Minister did not find time to visit or ask about meโ€”I am also a citizen. He is the minister of Albanian citizens, not the minister of the Socialist Party. I was the injured person in the Trauma Hospital. - Who will your report be addressed to? Kalaja: First, to the person who reported me for allegedly assaulting a police officer, and second, for torture. It's a matter of torture; going out to protest and being tortured is illegal. Kalaja: I want to call on the State Police to remain calm and restrained. They wanted to draw a red line. They shoot at people, while protesters shoot at signs. Protests cannot be stopped with these fascist methods. If they think they can intimidate me, I will be in the square.
