Italian Sports Minister Andrea Abodi stated that Italian football needs to be rebuilt and that this process must begin with a renewal of the leadership of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). "The government has shown its commitment to Italian sport over the years. It is not correct to deny its responsibility for the third consecutive World Cup failure by blaming only the institutions," said Abodi. The minister emphasized that he will ask FIGC president Gabriele Gravina to resign, adding: "I expect an increase in dignity from him." Abodi thanked the team and coach for their demonstrated commitment but did not hesitate to criticize the management of Italian football. "Football is a sport, but in Italy it has taken on a cultural role and international prestige. It is painful to think that an entire generation of children has not experienced the emotion of the National Team in a World Cup." The minister added that the government will continue to support sport but stressed the need for responsibility, humility, and respect from all stakeholders. "Italy must return to the global football stage," he said. When asked whether FIGC should be placed under special administration, Abodi replied that this can only be decided when four specific circumstances prove the managerial or legal collapse of the Federation. According to the CONI Statute, emergency intervention is required in the presence of serious administrative irregularities, violations of sports regulations, the inability of governing bodies to function, or the inability to ensure the development of championships, also based on the principles of the Olympic Charter. Abodi also mentioned examples of previous dignified resignations in Italian football: "Abete left after the failure in Brazil, while the late Tavecchio did the same after elimination by Sweden. The time to mention new names has not yet come, but we must learn from past mistakes."
