Despite the failure in the qualifying stage, Italy could still be part of the 2026 World Cup. This is according to foreign media reports, which cite statements made by the well-known Italian businessman, Paolo Zampolli. The latter has publicly stated that he has asked FIFA to bring the "Azzurri" to the USA to participate in the final stage of the World Cup. Zampolli, among other things a special envoy of former U.S. President Donald Trump and a close friend of his, has proposed that Iran be excluded and Italy be admitted to this competition.
"I confirm that I have suggested to Trump and Infantino that Italy replace Iran in the World Cup. I am Italian by origin and it would be a dream to see the 'Azzurri' in a tournament organized by the USA. With four trophies, they have the tradition to justify their inclusion," Zampolli told the Financial Times.
But how likely is this to happen? So far, the chances are slim, as earlier Gianni Infantino himself publicly opposed the idea of excluding Iran from the World Cup despite the conflict with the USA. He even added that football is beyond politics, sparking strong reactions, since in the case of Russia, politics was decisive in excluding Russian teams from every FIFA and UEFA competition. And perhaps due to these reactions, Infantino may contradict himself and open a spot for his homeland in this World Cup.
On the other hand, Donald Trump's efforts to mend relations with Giorgia Meloni could be key. After their clash over Pope Leo, perhaps Trump will try to "woo" Meloni by enabling qualification for the World Cup.
