As of today, new border control rules have come into effect in the Schengen area, following the full activation of the European Entry/Exit System (EES). This new mechanism replaces traditional passport stamps with a digital system that automatically records the entry and exit of citizens from countries outside the European Union.
In practice, travelers must now use self-service terminals at the EU's external borders to scan their travel documents. During the first registration, the system collects biometric data such as facial images and fingerprints, which are stored for up to three years and used for verification during future entries and exits.
The new rules apply to all citizens who are not part of the EU or Schengen area and are traveling for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. This includes those traveling visa-free for tourism or business purposes, as well as individuals who own property in the EU but do not have a residence permit.
