In an atmosphere heavy with grief, family and friends bid their final farewell today to 19-year-old Myrto, who lost her life under tragic circumstances three days ago in Argostoli, Kefalonia. Overwhelmed by pain, her mother attended the funeral ceremony at the city's Metropolitan Church, where floral wreaths bore the messages "Have a safe journey, my angel" and "We love you, Myrto."
The death of the 19-year-old of Albanian origin has shaken not only Kefalonia but the entire Greek public. According to investigations, Myrto was in a hotel room with three young men: a 26-year-old former weightlifter, a 23-year-old, and a 22-year-old. Preliminary testimonies indicate they had used narcotics, but around 4 a.m., her condition deteriorated significantly.
The 26-year-old, arrested in connection with the case, has admitted to being the one who purchased the drugs. In his testimony, he claims he thought Myrto was having an epileptic seizure and tried to help her. According to him, this is also why traces of blood were found in the room, as he says the girl bit his hand.
On the other hand, the 22-year-old claims he was in another room in the company of a girl and was notified by phone when Myrto felt unwell. He says that together with the others, they took her outside for air and did not abandon her but stayed by her side until the ambulance arrived.
However, Myrto's family is demanding a full investigation and clarification of all responsibilities, as the family's lawyer has stated that after the unconscious 19-year-old was sent to the hospital, there were no doctors present, and they arrived when it was too late. One of the main questions being investigated is how long the girl remained unconscious and convulsing in the hotel room before the ambulance was called, and whether she was left or abandoned outside the hotel, as it is also said that she was found by passersby who alerted emergency services.
Authorities are also investigating the possible role of a 66-year-old from Preveza, who reportedly communicated with Myrto until the early morning hours and had sent her 220 euros.
But beyond the tragedy, the case has sparked intense debate on social media as well. Some comments have focused on the girl's appearance or her personal choices. Meanwhile, many others have reacted angrily to this line of reasoning, emphasizing that the issue is not how a 19-year-old girl dressed or what she did, but why she lost her life and why society continues to scrutinize the victim instead of seeking answers about what happened.
