The Special Court of Appeals has postponed the review of an appeal filed by Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj regarding the annulment of a First Instance decision to suspend the deadlines for pre-trial detention.

The reason for the session's failure was an irregularity in the notification of Veliaj, reports Top Channel journalist Anila Hoxha. The case is now expected to be reviewed on April 29.

In a statement to the media after the session, his defense lawyer Plarent Ndreca said the decision to postpone was fair, as there was an irregularity.

"Today, the client was notified, but it was postponed due to an irregularity in the signature by the head of the detention institution. I can say it was an irregularity in the way it was signed, and to avoid compromising the decision, the court rightly decided to postpone it for 4 days. What is more fundamental is the change in this practice that harms not only Veliaj but all detainees, who have no reason for their pre-trial detention to be suspended as long as their lawyer or they themselves do not have illegal reasons for postponing sessions," Ndreca said. / Top Channel
