A tragic end for a 68-year-old from Durrës, who was arrested a few weeks ago for domestic violence. After his health condition worsened, Hajri Robi passed away in the early hours of this morning at the "Mother Teresa" University Hospital Center, where he was hospitalized in intensive care.
He was arrested on March 12, after assaulting one of his sisters, who had gone to help him in the home where the 68-year-old lived with another ill sister. Twelve years ago, it was reported that he attempted to self-immolate with gasoline in the city center. His acquaintances say he returned from emigration in a depressive state, and his condition worsened over the years. In the family home this afternoon, silence prevails, while neighbors recount his struggles.
"They are a very good family. Very wise and positive people. The sisters have taken care of him all their lives, but he had mental health issues. He was treated, but recently he deteriorated a lot. He even laid hands on both sisters. One sister is ill. Both have cared for him to the maximum. He had no problems with others in the neighborhood; he was respected. He only had issues with himself, but recently also with his family. He has now ended it all. We are sorry."
After his arrest in March, the court ordered compulsory treatment for him. Initially, he was transferred to Lezhë Prison and then to the prison hospital, but his condition worsened at the beginning of the month, and he was sent to QSUT, where he ultimately passed away due to cardio-respiratory arrest and accompanying illnesses.
Robi's case once again highlights the challenges faced by individuals with mental health issues, their families, and the necessity of institutional support for families and individuals dealing with such issues and domestic violence.
