A large banner reading "Justice for the Peshkëpia Massacre" is being placed in front of the Constitutional Court. It lists the names of Fatmir Shehu and Arsen Gjini, described as "Martyrs of the Homeland," while at the bottom, Fredi Beleri is named as the accused.
The story of the Peshkëpia massacre begins in 1994, when a guard and the commander of the unit were killed, and four other soldiers were wounded. The Peshkëpia Border Post in Gjirokastër was attacked on April 10, 1994, around 3:00 a.m. The Greek terrorist organization "Mavi" crossed the green border from Greece and entered Albanian territory at the Peshkëpia Border Post, where about 130 recruits who had not yet been issued weapons were stationed. Strangely, during those days, the border guards were also without ammunition.
They killed the post commander, Fatmir Shehu, and soldier Arsen Gjini, and wounded other soldiers: Ardian Velmishi, Janaq Zaka, and Frederik Kalemi. Arsen Gjini was shot first during the attack and was killed. The perpetrators then stormed the two-story building, entering the dormitory where the recruits were and the depot where weapons were stored to prevent any counterattack. During the attack, they also took hostage one of the former non-commissioned officers of the border unit, Qemal Stroka, who was later released at the border.
Greek authorities arrested seven suspects in the Peshkëpia massacre on March 18, 1995. They had just failed in an attempt to attack the Llongos border post. The arrested individuals were found with weapons and ammunition stolen from the Peshkëpia Border Post.
The detainees of the so-called "Pyrrhus I" command were: Jorgos Anastasulis, 34, Greek citizen, officer; Apostolos Karvelas, 26, Greek citizen (former traffic police officer); Marios Kutula, 25, Albanian citizen; Fredi Beleri, Albanian citizen, 23 (who uses several names such as Dionisios and Foti); Jorgo Kristo, 26; Jorgo Papa, 30, all from Himara; and Harallamb Papa, 21, from Krioneri, Gjirokastër. Shqiptarja.com has once again released the video of Fredi Beleri's arrest in 1995 in Ioannina along with the "Mavi" group.
