A serious incident occurred on the Greek island of Crete, where prisoners set fire to their cells in protest after their request to be transferred to other areas within the facility was denied by the authorities.

The perpetrators were four local inmates who, according to the institution's director, Charalambos Kiomourtzis, at 9:00 PM on Friday requested to be moved to another wing due to conflicts with other prisoners.

Based on a report by "Protothema," since it was time for the prisoner count, the guards on duty told them they would consider the request after the count. Subsequently, while inside their cell, the four inmates set fire to one of the mattresses, and the smoke spread rapidly, causing distress among all prisoners. Four prison officers opened the cell, removed the inmates, and managed to extinguish the fire using fire extinguishers.
