An unusual incident occurred in Iceland when a passenger plane pilot flew at an extremely low altitude over his hometown to mark his retirement. The event happened on Saturday, during the pilot's final commercial flight after 40 years of service. He was operating a Boeing 757 on the Frankfurt-Iceland route when he decided to fly over the volcanic archipelago Vestmannaeyjar, in the south of the country, descending to about 100 meters above ground.
The unusual maneuver caused concern among residents and passengers, who were startled by the plane's proximity to houses and the terrain. Footage published by residents shows the plane flying at a very low altitude, almost at the level of hills and rooftops. Some reported loud noises and vibrations, while others said they feared the plane might crash.
The airline Icelandair reacted immediately, emphasizing that the flight at that altitude was carried out without its knowledge and authorization. The flight director, Linda Gunnarsdรณttir, described the event as serious, stressing that aviation procedures are very strict and that such an action is not part of standard practices.
The company has reported the pilot to the police and has launched an internal investigation into the case. Meanwhile, authorities continue investigations to determine responsibilities and possible violations.
