Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci said six students are in intensive care, with three in critical condition. Governor Mukerrem Unluer told reporters that the attack, which occurred in Kahramanmaras province, was carried out by an eighth-grade student, aged 14. Unluer said it is believed the student who carried out the shooting used a weapon belonging to his father, a former police officer. "The eighth-grade student came with five weapons and seven magazines, which we believe belonged to his father, a former police officer. He entered two classrooms where fifth-grade students were present, shooting randomly," he stated. He allegedly hid the weapon in a backpack, entered two classrooms, and opened fire "randomly." The attacker committed suicide. In photos taken by witnesses of this disturbing incident, children are seen jumping out of the school windows. This shooting is the second in the country in just two days. The previous shooting occurred at a high school in Sanliurfa province in the southeast of the country on Tuesday. It was carried out by a former student who committed suicide in a confrontation with police after injuring 16 people. Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said prosecutors have launched an investigation into the shooting. School shootings are rare in Turkey. In May 2024, a former student shot and killed the principal of a private high school in Istanbul five months after being expelled. Turkey's strict gun laws require permits, registration, and mental and criminal background checks. Severe penalties are also prescribed for illegal possession.
