The armed suspect who attacked a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, forcing President Donald Trump to evacuate, has been identified as Cole Tomas Allen, three sources familiar with the matter told CNN.
The 31-year-old man from California studied engineering and is a graduate of the California Institute of Technology, also known as Caltech, according to materials shared with CNN.
The suspect is believed to have been a guest at the Washington Hilton hotel where the incident occurred, and police have "secured a room" to determine what is inside, according to Acting Metropolitan Police Department Chief Jeffery Carroll.
Carroll also said the suspect was armed with a shotgun, a pistol, and several knives, and "exchanged fire" with law enforcement officers when he was stopped and taken into custody.

Authorities said the suspect was not shot but was taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment. An injured Secret Service agent was also taken to the hospital, said Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser.
The suspect is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, where he will face two charges: using a firearm during a crime of violence and assaulting a federal officer with a dangerous weapon, said U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro.
DC Police Chief said the suspect appeared to be a "lone actor," while Trump noted that his security team was not aware of any threats before Saturday's dinner.
FBI Director Kash Patel said investigators will "carefully" review the suspect's background. The suspect worked as a teacher and video game developer from Southern California, according to public records.
