A rare discovery in the ocean depths has captured the attention of scientists after researchers encountered a formation resembling a "yellow brick road" in one of the planet's least explored areas. The discovery was made in 2022 by the research vessel Nautilus during an expedition north of the Hawaiian Islands, in the Papahฤnaumokuฤkea Marine National Monument, one of the world's largest marine reserves.
The published footage shows a surface that looks like a paved road with "yellow bricks," prompting one of the researchers to humorously remark, "It's the road to Atlantis." The formation is located about 1,000 meters below the water's surface and, despite the great depth, creates the illusion of dry land.
According to experts, this structure is actually a fragmented flow of volcanic rock called hyaloclastite, created by high-energy eruptions. The distinctive 90-degree angled cracks are the result of thermal stress from repeated cycles of heating and cooling during volcanic activity.
