South Korean authorities have revealed that two fighter jets collided mid-air in 2021 after pilots were taking photos and videos during flight. The incident occurred during an air mission over the central city of Daegu, according to a report by the Board of Audit and Inspection in Seoul. The pilots managed to escape without injuries, but the collision caused significant damage to the aircraft, costing the military approximately 880 million won (about $596,000) in repairs. One of the pilots, who has since left the military, was fined 88 million won. According to the report, the incident happened after the pilot wanted to take some photos to commemorate his final flight with the military unit. Taking photos during important flights was "a widespread practice among pilots at the time," the audit board noted. The pilot had previously stated his intention during a briefing before the mission's departure. He was flying as a wingman, following the lead aircraft during the operation. While returning to base, he began taking photos using his personal phone.
