Kosovo authorities arrested a man on Saturday suspected of committing war crimes against the civilian population in Kosovo during the 1998-99 war.

In a media statement, the Special Prosecution identified the suspect only by the initials A.D., stating that he is suspected of having committed the alleged crimes in the village of Ivaja and surrounding villages of the southern Kosovo city of Kaçanik.

The prosecution did not specify where he was captured but mentioned that during his arrest, a weapon, two magazines, 30 rounds of ammunition, an air rifle, and an MUP uniform were found and seized, presumably referring to the Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Authorities did not provide further details about the suspect or the alleged crimes.

His arrest comes a few weeks after a court in Prishtina sentenced two former members of Serbian police and military forces to prison for war crimes in Kosovo during the 1998-99 war.

On March 18, the Prishtina court sentenced Zoran Kostić to 15 years in prison, while Dragan Milović received a 7-year sentence during a session last week.

During the war in Kosovo, more than 13,000 civilians—mostly Albanians—were killed, while thousands more disappeared.

Over 1,500 people remain missing, the majority of them Albanians.

Recently, Kosovo authorities have arrested numerous suspects and filed a series of indictments for war crimes in Kosovo.

Meanwhile, since the end of the war, dozens of suspects have been convicted for these crimes by local and international institutions.

Initially after the war, from 2000 to 2008, war crimes in Kosovo were investigated by the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), and from 2008, by the European Union Rule of Law Mission (EULEX).

In 2018, EULEX handed over the cases to local judicial authorities.
