Shihab-Eldin, a 41-year-old journalist who was visiting family in Kuwait, has not posted anything online or been seen in public since March 2, the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists announced on Monday. CPJ stated that he has been charged with spreading false information, endangering national security, and misusing a mobile phone. On March 15, Kuwait enacted a law that includes a provision stipulating prison sentences of up to 10 years for spreading false rumors related to military entities with the intent to undermine trust in them. Before his detention, Shihab-Eldin had posted publicly available videos and images related to the war. The latest posts on his Substack account include footage of an American fighter jet crashing near a U.S. base in Kuwait. Shihab-Eldin describes himself as an independent journalist who has worked for several international media outlets, including The New York Times, HBO, Vice, PBS, BBC, and Al Jazeera. It is unclear whether he was working during his visit to Kuwait, aside from staying with family.
