HiPP brand baby food jars have been urgently recalled from markets in Austria after one of the samples taken from the jars tested positive for rat poison.

Specifically, the case was reported by a customer in Austria regarding a 190g jar of carrot and potato puree. For safety reasons, the products have been withdrawn from over 1,000 supermarkets. In a statement, the HiPP company said that "the possibility could not be ruled out that a hazardous substance had been introduced into the product and that the carrot and potato jars may have been tampered with."

The police statement indicated that the affected jars had a sticker with a red circle on the bottom of the jar and a lid that was already open, damaged, missing a safety seal, or had an unusual odor.

"According to our current knowledge, this critical situation involves external criminal interference affecting the distribution channel of Spar Austria," the company stated.

HiPP advised customers not to consume the contents of jars purchased from Spar Austria. The same product is also sold in Albania, in supermarkets and pharmacies, but so far there have been no reports or cases mentioned.
