Spanish judicial authorities have concluded that there are no elements of criminal liability in the traffic accident that killed Jota and Silva, thus closing the investigation into one of the most tragic events in recent football history.
The traffic accident occurred on July 3, 2025, on the A-52 highway near Cernadilla in northern Spain, when their Lamborghini veered off the road while overtaking, crashed into a guardrail, and caught fire.
The conclusion of the investigation led by the High Court of Justice of Castile and León is that the accident was caused by a tire blowout at a critical moment, leading to a loss of control of the vehicle.
At the time of the accident, Jota and Silva were traveling towards Santander, where they planned to continue their journey by ferry to the United Kingdom, where Jota was set to begin preparations with Liverpool for the new season. Andre Silva was also a professional footballer and played for Portugal's Penafiel.
The Liverpool footballer was driving the car because, after lung surgery, he was advised to avoid air travel.
The funeral of Jota and Silva was held in Gondomar, a city near Porto, where both began their football careers.
Following the tragedy, Liverpool decided to retire Jota's number 20 jersey across all age groups, and Reds fans pay tribute to him by singing his song in the 20th minute of every match at Anfield.
