Sawe shattered the world record of 2:00:35 set by the late Kelvin Kiptum at the 2023 Chicago Marathon. Another Kenyan, Eliud Kipchoge, ran a marathon distance of 1:59:40.2 in 2019, but that was not achieved in a race under world record conditions. Sunday's runner-up, Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha, clocked 1:59:41 in his marathon debut. Ethiopian Tigst Assefa defended her women's title with an unofficial time of 2:15:41, breaking her own world record for women-only races (2:15:50) set in London last year. That is the 15th fastest time in history overall, behind 14 results from marathons where women ran simultaneously with men and/or had male pacemakers. Assefa pulled away from Kenyan Hellen Obiri on the final 385-yard straight on The Mall, crossing the finish line 12 seconds ahead of her. Obiri is a two-time winner of the Boston and New York marathons. Another Kenyan, Joyciline Jepkosgei, finished two seconds further behind Obiri. Jepkosgei was the world's fastest marathoner in 2025 with a time of 2:14:00 achieved in Valencia, Spain, in December.
