In a statement published by Reuters, the Malian army urged residents to "remain calm" and noted that soldiers were setting up barricades at the entrance to Bamako. Footage posted on social media shows that militants from the FLA and JNIM groups managed to enter the capital, where government forces are retreating in the face of their assault. The FLA militant group announced that they had seized "key positions" in the cities of Kidal and Gao, located in the Tuareg region, where the group has its stronghold. It is worth recalling that these groups have been fighting against the central government in Mali since 2020, when a military junta took control of the country. Militants from the JNIM group, active around the capital, also kidnapped two citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina last year, who were released after two months.
