To start, thoroughly mix butter with sour cream, powdered sugar, salt, and vanilla sugar. Once the mixture becomes smooth, add flour and baking powder, then knead everything well until you get a smooth dough.
On a floured surface, roll out the dough into a rectangle. Cut it into 5 equal strips. Place sour cherry jam in the center of each strip, then carefully fold the dough over, seal the ends, and turn the strudels so the seam is on the bottom.
Transfer the shaped strudels onto baking paper in a baking tray. If desired, you can cut the strudels into smaller pieces. Bake them in a preheated oven at 200ยฐC for about 20 minutes. They should not turn dark; instead, they should remain light and lightly baked.
