French President Emmanuel Macron assured Athens on Saturday that the mutual assistance clause between European Union countries in the event of an attack is as solid as a rock and leaves no room for ambiguity. "For Greece and France, Article 42.7 of the EU treaty is as solid as a rock, meaning it is an obligation," the French president said at a press conference. "Reinforced concrete," added Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, standing beside him. He stated that all aspects of that part of the treaty are clear. "I do not believe there is a need today to change or modify the treaties. They are very clear. It is simply necessary first to continue strengthening the defense and security of all our countries, and then move toward the sovereign Europe we want," said Emmanuel Macron on the second day of his visit to Greece. According to Emmanuel Macron, Article 42.7 is essentially stronger than Article 5 of the NATO treaty, i.e., the mutual assistance clause at the core of the U.S.-EU military alliance, which Donald Trump regularly calls into question. "It provides for solidarity between member states but leaves no room for negotiation. We have a treaty clause that is stronger than Article 5 of the NATO alliance," Macron insisted regarding the European treaty.
