As Trump stated in an interview with Fox News, the U.S. delegation was supposed to be led by Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, but just hours before the trip, Trump told them they would not be traveling. "We hold all the cards. They can invite us whenever they want, but you won't be flying 18 hours just to sit and talk about nothing," Trump said.

This decision comes at a time when Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was in Pakistan, where he stated that he had held a meeting with the Pakistani delegation and made it clear that he had no intention of meeting with Americans. After meeting with Pakistan's prime minister and the country's military leadership, Araghchi returned to Iran.

Although Pakistan is making efforts to establish a diplomatic channel between the U.S. and Iran, the continuation of negotiations currently seems unlikely.
