The collapse of the decorative wall attic at the Skenderija Center has once again raised questions about the safety and future of this Sarajevo landmark. The director of Skenderija confirmed that court experts immediately went to the site and that the news regarding the damage is nonetheless reassuring. "The good news in this catastrophic situation is that the parapet or attic, which serves a decorative function, collapsed. It has nothing to do with the roof structure and as such does not affect the rest of the building at all," the director explained to TVSA, adding that his offices are located right behind that section and that experts found no damage inside the space itself. He emphasized that a tragedy was avoided thanks to the vigilance of employees who conduct daily visual inspections of the complex. "A crack was noticed precisely on this part of the attic, where we reacted in time and fenced off this area before the fall," he said. Despite the immediate danger being averted, the management sees this as a symptom of a much deeper problem, according to Avdić. "I informed the founder, who is responsible—the Sarajevo Canton, the owner of the building—that this is a final warning to start strategic planning for what we want with the Skenderija Center. It deserves to be the heart of Sarajevo, and we need to begin renovation and rehabilitation; there is no more time to wait," he added. The director also reflected on earlier management moves, such as closing part of the Privredni Grad due to the risk of asbestos, which at the time was met with misunderstanding from some of the public. "Unfortunately, I continuously sought solutions to start the rehabilitation and removal of asbestos, but that has not yet happened. It has been a year since that situation, and I definitely do not want to continue like this," he stated. One of the key problems facing the management is the fact that Skenderija has been under protection since 2019, which complicates any interventions without complex permits. "When it comes to the facade, we must seek a building permit for any work, contact the municipality, and also the Commission for the Protection of Monuments. Without their decision, we cannot even repair this, even if we wanted to. So, the founder must resolve this," he said. Although the media often blames the current management, the director dismisses these accusations as unfounded, emphasizing that they are doing their utmost within the available and insufficient resources. "Without financial resources, without investment in the reconstruction of a building that has realistically been old and neglected for over 25 years, we cannot expect anything better. We are doing what we are hired to do… but the responsibility for the entire center, for its investments, lies with the founder," he added. When asked if there is a risk of further collapse, he stated: "There is no expert who can predict and say 'this or that part will collapse.' We are not in a position to react now without instructions from cantonal, federal, and municipal inspections," Avdić said. An urgent meeting with the Government and Assembly of Sarajevo Canton has been requested for tomorrow. The management expects concrete steps, not just promises: "We do not have a rehabilitation plan at this moment because we have no response from the founder. I am requesting an urgent meeting for the Assembly to decide how to treat the Skenderija Center and how to carry out its rehabilitation."
