The Brazilian Film Days begin on Monday, May 4th at 8 PM with the screening of "I'm Still Here" by Walter Salles, winner of the 2025 Oscar for Best International Film.
This politically engaged drama, set during the period of the military dictatorship in Brazil, follows a woman whose life is shattered by state violence. The film explores themes of memory, grief, and resistance from a deeply personal perspective. Based on a true story, it features outstanding performances, particularly by Fernanda Torres.
On Tuesday, May 5th at 8 PM, the program features the film "In Search of the Moon" directed by Bruno Barreto. It is a biographical drama about the powerful bond between American poet Elizabeth Bishop and Brazilian architect Lota de Macedo Soares. This sensual and comedic classic is based on the novel by Jorge Amado. After her husband's death, Dona Flor remarries. Her first husband returns as a ghost, embodying passion and chaos in contrast to her stable new life.
The Brazilian Film Days program concludes on Thursday, May 7th at 8 PM with the screening of the film "Manas" directed by Marianne Brennand. Set in the Brazilian Amazon, "Manas" follows a young girl navigating the harsh reality shaped by exploitation and silence within her community. The film blends social realism with restrained, intimate storytelling, focusing on the resilience and fragility of childhood. It premiered at the Venice Film Festival (in the Giornate degli Autori program).
