Cars are selling so well that the company now faces a growing backlog for its most exclusive offerings. The "Audi Sport racing legends" program is struggling to keep pace with global demand, which is increasing faster than the workshop can handle.

Rolf Michl, CEO of Audi Sport GmbH, revealed that interest in retired racing machines has exceeded their initial expectations. The program requires a complete factory restoration of each race car to ensure it is track-ready immediately upon delivery. This time-consuming process has created a waiting list that now extends "well beyond the 2026 season."

The company began selling factory-supported race cars like the Audi R8 LMS GT3 EVO from the film "Gran Turismo" in 2024, but the initiative matured into a formal department in 2025.

According to Audi, renewed interest in reviving racing series has fueled demand for machines from the DTM Class 1 era, which spans from 1993 to 2020.

This explains why three examples of the Audi RS 5 DTM were sold in less than a year. The racing version differs significantly from the road-going RS 5 Coupe, as it uses a carbon fiber monocoque and extreme aerodynamics. Models after 2019 switched from the older V8 engine to a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine, producing 618 hp.

Also on offer are more extreme LMP prototypes like the 2013 Audi R18 e-tron quattro, which has already found its place in a private collection. This model combines a mid-mounted V6 TDI engine with a sophisticated hybrid system, which helped Audi secure multiple victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Audi Sport engineers are now working on additional prototypes for sale, aiming to ensure their complex components are restored to factory standards after being driven to the limit in grueling races. For the lucky owners who have already taken delivery of the cars, the team provides technical support so they can enjoy them on the track rather than treating them as museum exhibits.

The 2026 season includes appearances at classic races at Hockenheim, Le Mans, Nรผrburgring, and the Red Bull Ring. At the iconic Circuit de la Sarthe, Audi will showcase its dominant endurance racing tradition by displaying the R10 TDI with a V12 diesel engine alongside the hybrid R18 e-tron quattro.
