He emphasizes that for the same reason, Iranians need the conflict to stop. "Their incentives are misaligned. The Russians want the conflict to continue because they are making record profits, while the Iranians want it to stop because they are unable to export or import," Helal told Al Jazeera. He added that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi visited Russia to replenish supplies of ammunition and defense systems, which have been decimated in this war. "Additionally, he sought diplomatic support, as Russia provides backing through the UN Security Council, so they will rely on that support in this crisis in the future," he said. He recalled that Iran and Russia have had a security partnership for 15 years. "They were very close partners during the Arab Spring and the civil war in Syria. They found a common goal in supporting Bashar al-Assad's regime," Helal stated.
