The report states that the damage from Iranian retaliatory strikes on U.S. military bases in seven Middle Eastern countries is far greater than publicly acknowledged, with repairs potentially costing billions of dollars.
Iran struck dozens of targets, including warehouses, command centers, aircraft hangars, satellite communication infrastructure, runways, advanced radar systems, and dozens of aircraft, according to the report.
The Pentagon, per the same report, has not publicly disclosed details on the extent of the damage to U.S. military bases, while U.S. Central Command declined to comment on battle damage assessments.
Some Republican lawmakers, according to the report, have privately expressed dissatisfaction with senior Pentagon officials for refusing to provide information on the scale of the damage or an estimate of repair costs.
"No one knows anything. And it's not that we're not asking. We've been asking for weeks and getting no details, all while the Pentagon is requesting a record-high budget," a congressional aide told NBC News.
The report also notes that the damage and repair costs could reignite debate over the justification for maintaining U.S. bases so close to adversaries like Iran.
